One of the easiest ways to give your kitchen a fresh look is to reface your cabinets. Instead of replacing your cabinets entirely, save time and money by refinishing them or replacing just the doors. This can be done for a quarter of the cost of new cabinets. And the amount of time your kitchen will be out of commission will be days instead of weeks.
First the existing cabinet doors are removed. They will be sanded down to remove the old finish. Then the sides and front panels of the old cabinets will be sanded as well to remove the old finish. Next veneer is applied to the front and sides of the cabinets and the doors. Veneer is a thin wood substrate that adheres to the wood surface of the cabinets and doors that allows them to be refinished and look new.
When this is done, it is time to apply the new stain. The inside of the cabinets will be stained first, then the front and sides. The doors are stained last, because they are the last part to be put on. After the first coat of stain is dry a second coat will be applied to the cabinets and doors.
Once the second coat of stain is dry, polyurethane will be applied. Polyurethane will protect the finish on the cabinets from grease splatters and food spills that occur so often in kitchens. About 3 coats of polyurethane will need to be applied to ensure the most protection.
Finally, when everything is dry, the cabinet doors will be reattached to the cabinet fronts. When everything is back together, the process is complete. You have cabinets that look brand new and a kitchen with a whole new look. And all for a fraction of the cost of total cabinet replacement.
Another option is to replace the cabinet doors with new ones. Maybe the existing doors are too damaged to be refinished. Or perhaps you would like to install doors with intricate carving or with glass. The cabinet sides and fronts can still be refinished to match the new doors you plan to install. You will still save time and money by keeping the existing cabinets.
If you were planning to add additional cabinet space, new cabinets can be installed that will match the refaced cabinets. You don’t have to rebuild all of the cabinets just because you need to add new ones as well. Everything will be custom designed to match perfectly. In some cases, existing kitchen cabinets can be moved with still minimal work necessary. And this will eliminate the need to for new cabinets to be built from scratch. So even if you want to change the layout of your kitchen, it still may not be necessary to install new cabinets.
